DR-WALTER supports climate cyclist Michael Evertz on his “Expedition Hope”

27.08.2025

Michael Evertz has been traveling on his eye-catching green bicycle for over two years. His goal is to raise awareness of climate protection among people worldwide and motivate them to take concrete action. DR-WALTER is supporting him on his “Expedition Hope” with the appropriate travel insurance.

From Berlin to the Cape of Good Hope

Evertz set off from Berlin on April 22, 2023, “International Earth Day.” His route took him via Potsdam, Cologne, and the Zugspitze to southern Europe and from there via the Middle East to Dubai, where the UN Climate Change Conference COP 28 was taking place. He then cycled on through Oman, Egypt, and numerous African countries to South Africa. Since then, he has covered more than 30,000 kilometers.

Dialogue and change of consciousness

On his journey, Evertz seeks dialogue with local people. He lectures in schools and companies, meets scientists and ministers, addresses the press, and spreads his message: “Stand up for the planet. Start collaboration.” Especially impressive are his encounters with indigenous communities and fishermen, who are confronted with the consequences of climate change on a daily basis. It becomes clear that the people most affected are also those who have contributed the least to the crisis.

A call for cooperation

Evertz makes it clear that global challenges can only be overcome through joint action. “We urgently need a new culture of cooperation if we want to achieve the UN's 17 sustainability goals,” he emphasizes. His commitment is intended to encourage and send a signal: change is possible if everyone cooperates.

On the road with risks – covered by DR-WALTER

The long and exhausting journey was not without incident: accidents, injuries, and infections have already required medical treatment. This highlights the importance of reliable travel health insurance – DR-WALTER provides the researcher and climate cyclist with such protection.

Moving forward with hope

Despite all the challenges, Evertz remains optimistic. From Cape Town, he writes: “Without cultural change, we cannot overcome the crises of our time. That is why we must strengthen values that unite us. I am fighting for this because I have never done anything more meaningful in my life. Now I have to step on the gas because I will soon be heading to Brazil. I am already accredited for the UN Climate Change Conference in Belém (COP 30).”
