Safe school trips

30.04.2007

Not every students’ accident during a school trip is covered by insurance. Travel insurance experts Dr. Walter GmbH have discovered huge gaps in statutory insurance coverage for school trips after worried parents had frequently asked for information on this matter. Some of the students’ private activities like eating, drinking, sleeping or personal hygiene are not covered by insurance. Furthermore, there is also a problem in case of an accident during private activities taking place at a discotheque or while visiting a friend. Since not all students have private liability insurance, the responsible teachers can also get into serious trouble in case of an emergency.Statutory insurance coverage is also limited during school trips to other countries. Students who do not have private foreign health insurance are only entitled to have some specific services reimbursed in case of illness abroad. And these services never include return transport costs. The existence of this gap is also confirmed by the Landesunfallkasse NRW (North Rhine-Westphalian Accident Insurance Fund). When asked, its Division Manager for Medical Rehabilitation/Reimbursement, Günther Baum, explained that statutory accident insurance does not provide full-time insurance coverage during school trips. In order to eliminate the risk of non-covered costs in case of illness or accidents for students, parents and teachers, Dr. Walter GmbH offers its new insurance policy “gogogo” as a supplementary insurance for the incomplete statutory insurance coverage of school trips.
